![Surprise cameo! Odyssey fanboyism after the cut.

See that oar up there? My absolute favorite part of the Odyssey (and there are a lot of contenders!) is that after his adventures, Odysseusisn’t done.The ghost of Tiresius tells him in the land of the dead that after he returns to Ithaca, he must set out again, carrying an oar, until he finds a place so far inland that someone mistakes his oar for a winnowing fan. Presumably they will say, “why is that hobo carrying around a fan?” instead of “why is that hobo carrying around an oar?” When he hears the former, he’s supposed to plant the oar right there in the ground and set up a shrine to Poseidon.
Why is this so cool? It’s cool that Poseidon wants to extend his domain into the dryer part of the world. It’s cool that Odysseus remains the wanderer. But it is also the first clear example in literature of an author setting the option for a sequel. Two other people have attempted the story of Odysseus and his oar (Dante and some unknown Greek poet) and I’m the third! … That sounded arrogant.
Since the oceans of Wesslingsaung’s world are toxic, and only a select few can navigate them, it is a perfect fit for Odysseus’s final resting place. I had a scene where Runi does mistake the oar for a fan, and Odysseus and Saung have a laugh, but I got rid of it for the same reason I put this nerd-out after a cut.
That’s all I can say about Odysseus’s role in the story without spoilers! But I promise this: there won’t be an influx of human protagonists ruining an otherwise awesome world of monsters (I’m looking at you: extended Sonic the Hedgehog canon). Every human in the story is present in this scene.

This is the perfect political cartoon, because every four years you can just change the faces on the cans and it’s reborn as a new and insightful editorial comic.
